Region Stockholm's budget for 2026 is SEK 140 billion. The largest share of these funds, about SEK 107 billion, stems from income tax. If you live in Stockholm County and have taxable income, you pay SEK 12.33 of every SEK 100 you earn to Region Stockholm.
The funds are distributed (appropriated) between Region Stockholms different committees by decision from the Regional Council. These appropriations are comprised mostly of tax revenue, supplemented with government grants from the central government. The committees' appropriations for 2026 total SEK 111 billion. In addition to the appropriations from the Regional Council, committees and companies also have other revenue, such as from public transport ticket sales.
Most of the appropriations, and therefore most of your tax money, is spent on healthcare. They are also spent on public transport, culture and regional development. Below you can read about how the money is distributed between these different Committees.
Most tax revenue to healthcare
We spend about 82 percent of the Regional Council's appropriations on healthcare including dental care. In 2026, this will be SEK 91billion.
Healthcare in Region Stockholm is organised to ensure that you receive the right assessment and treatment when you need it. In some cases, this involves advanced treatment, while in other cases, you can stay at home and receive advice from a nurse over the phone.
Our healthcare facilities include emergency departments, health centres, local emergency care clinics, specialist clinics and highly specialised care units. Healthcare operations also encompass health promotion activities. These include, for instance, prevention programmes for both physical and mental health.
Tax revenue half of public transport funding
About 14 percent of the appropriations are spent on public transport and mobility services. For 2026, this means SEK 16 billion.
About 50 percent of public transport funding comes from tax revenue. The remainder is financed by ticket revenue, advertising space and rental income.
On a typical day in Stockholm, almost 700,000 people use public transport, which is comprised of the metro, buses, commuter trains, local trains and commuter boats. Region Stockholm plans, commissions and oversees public transport services and maintains and modernises the infrastructure.
Taxes bolster cultural life
Tax money is also used to bolster cultural life in Stockholm County. In 2026, 0.6 percent of the appropriations will be spent on culture. This corresponds to SEK 647 million.
We provide grants to a broad range of cultural activities, including popular education providers and local associations.
For us, it is particularly important that children and youth have access to cultural experiences. Culture in Stockholm County can entail shows and performances, art at metro stations and hospitals or joining a local association.
Tax money to regional development
Stockholm needs to remain a viable place to live also in the future. Accordingly, tax revenue is used to plan and prepare for the current and future needs of housing, infrastructure and public transport of Stockholm's residents.
In 2026, 0.2 percent of the Regional Council's appropriations are to be spent on regional development. This corresponds to SEK 196 million.
Regional development planning is all about creating sustainable plans for a growing region. We oversee and coordinate efforts to promote long-term and sustainable development in the Stockholm region. The vision for Stockholm is to be Europe's most attractive metropolitan region – for all aspects of life.
Tax to other operations
The remainder of the tax revenue is used to, for example, govern, oversee and coordinate Region Stockholm so that all operations function as well as possible.
