In the autumn of 2024, Region Stockholm was awarded an EU grant of 6.4 million Euros for the 5G Mobile Health Innovative solutions (5GMHI) project, where the previous investment is now being scaled up to test 5G services within healthcare.
The project has been awarded funding from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF-2), which is a program within the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HADEA).
The goal of the 5GMHI project is to:
- generate insights and knowledge about how the healthcare needs in Region Stockholm can be met with 5G technology
- investigate the effects and development of the 5G network for healthcare and how advanced 5G cloud services can be used to strengthen patient safety, quality, and communication
- explore how new services can be provided within healthcare for the benefit of the region's residents, patients, and employees.

Overview of 5GMHI
With the help of 5G, the 5GMHI project will explore new ways to optimise emergency care and ensure safer healthcare facilities
Drones in prehospital care
With drones, you can enhance the initial situation report for resource optimisation and plan healthcare interventions, as well as deploy defibrillators.
Video connection between ambulance and hospital
Ambulance-to-hospital video links enable improved triage and faster treatment for patients.
Positioning of medical equipment
Hospital beds/stretchers and medical technical equipment are critical resources that staff need to find quickly.
Streamline property management
The project implements Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) tools for property management.
5G Medical Net
In the project, a private, dedicated 5G indoor network called Medical Net will be built at Södersjukhuset.
