Overview of 5GMHI

By implementing 5G-powered services, the project will explore new ways to optimise emergency care, increase hospital efficiency, and ensure safer healthcare facilities.  

5G technology is becoming a platform for developing new innovative solutions in healthcare. Several of Region Stockholm's operations are collaborating in the project. It's Södersjukhuset, Ambulance, Locum, and the Research & Development department at the regional administration office. Tiohundra (Norrtälje Hospital)  and the Center for Resuscitation at KI/Sös are also participating. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Telia Sverige AB as a strategic project partner and will run between 2024 and 2026. 
 
The project focusses on pre-hospital, intra-hospital use cases, and facility management to contribute to patient safety, increased quality, and efficiency. 
 
The use cases that will be implemented using 5G technology are:

  • video-connected ambulances to the emergency room
  • drones as first responders for early situational awareness from the accident scene and delivery of defibrillators
  • location of connected hospital beds and medical technical equipment at Södersjukhuset 
  • sensors for measuring indoor climate and building operations with digital twins and augmented reality. 

The integration of 5G in healthcare can have a significant impact on how medical services are delivered and managed. 
 
The 5GHMI project is expected to:

  • Improve patient safety and quality of care with advanced communication technology.
  • Increase efficiency in hospital operations, from asset tracking to energy management.
  • Reduce response times in emergencies, potentially saving lives. 

Project Components

5G medical network

  • A 5G indoor network will be built at Södersjukhuset.
  • Telia is responsible for development, design, and installation. 

Streamline property management 

  • Connected sensors for monitoring and operation.  
  • AR/VR to facilitate and enhance maintenance.

RTLS – Real-Time Location Services

  • Material tracking to streamline processes and avoid unnecessary work.
  • Pilot test with approximately 100 hospital beds and other medical technical equipment.

Video connection to the ambulance

  • Connection to Södersjukhuset from the ambulance to assist in triage and preparing for medical interventions.
  • Pilot test with ambulances in operation.

Drone video

  • Enhanced first situation report for resource optimization and planning of care interventions.
