Political Organization

The political organization consists of the regional council and committees with responsibilities in their respective areas. The regional executive committee is a committee with a special responsibility for coordination and oversight, among other duties.

Administrations and Companies

Each committee has one or more administrations that carry out operational activities and implement decisions made by the regional council. Some administrations support multiple committees. Part of the operational activities is carried out by publicly owned companies.

Other Forms of Organization

A joint authority (kommunalförbund) is a political form of organization where Region Stockholm is a member alongside one or more other municipalities and/or regions. Through a joint authority, members jointly manage areas of responsibility that are difficult or inefficient to handle individually.

A foundation is a self-owned asset, with no owners or members, set aside to permanently serve a specific purpose. These include both operational foundations and grant-making foundations.

Cooperation bodies are platforms where different actors—such as municipalities, regions, government agencies, and sometimes private or non-profit organizations—join forces to address shared issues or development projects.

Coordinating associations (samordningsförbund) are a collaborative framework between the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), the Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), municipalities, and regions to fund coordinated rehabilitation efforts. There are eight coordinating associations in Region Stockholm.
